Bérénice
Jean-René Lemoine | Jean Racine
Titus and Bérénice share an all-consuming passion, but Rome’s law forbids their love. In this famous tragedy by Racine, no one dies for love but one does wear oneself out. While keeping the original text, Jean-René Lemoine directs a tense play, whose cold plot is an agitated turmoil.
On a golden floor covering the whole stage, helpless bodies stay at a distance from each other and yet, they’re magnetically drawn to one another. Grievances are spoken in alexandrines, halfway between a cry and a whisper. Rage and desire are suppressed, always about to escape. Bérénice is a story of absolute love. Heart-rending depths and separation rather than the devouring abyss that is reality.
