Inspired by Shiva, Lord of the dance, god with a thousand names, both creator and destructor, Shantala Shivalingappa performs with swift magnetic grace. ASH is the last part of a trilogy composed of women portraits imagined by director Aurélien Bory.
If ashes are related with destruction, they’re also a powerful fertiliser : in the symbol of death lies the possibility of life. In India, the ash is one of Shiva’s symbols, Lord of cremation and the cremation ground. Playing with forms and matters, Shantala Shivalingappa sumptuously sublimates the shade with a floor covered in ashes. She dances somewhere between Indian and Western traditions and eventually becomes a goddess who makes the stage space dance.
